Guidelines for Posting Messages

  • Family names: Family names (surnames) in both subject line and body text should be written in ALL UPPER CASE characters. This makes surnames easy to identify as opposed to patronymics or given names, which should be written in normal fashion (as here).
  • Town names: Spell place names as they are today, if possible. You may add other versions or spellings in parentheses. This will make it easier to spot a relevant posting. You may also use the map coordinates which you can obtain from the JewishGen ShtetlSeeker (for places in Central and Eastern Europe) to help further identify the place.
  • No commercial messages will be accepted. There may be an exception if a product or service is relevant to genealogy. In that case, the moderator may allow a one-time post.
  • Meaningful subject line required: Your subject line should give readers an idea of the content of your message. If you receive Rav-SIG in the digest format please do not use your "reply" button to respond to a post. Please create a meaningful subject line for your reply. If you are responding to a previous posting, your subject line should begin with RE: (subject line of previous post) + qualifier if needed.
  • Netiquette: Please review guidelines for posting messages, particularly the section on "netiquette."

Search for Previous Messages

  • Messages previously posted to the Rav-SIG mailing list may be searched using the JewishGen Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Message Archive. In the search field type in "ravsig" to retrieve past messages, or use the drop down menu to select "Rabbinic SIG," then type in your search term(s).
