The Jewish Genealogical Society of Los Angeles (JGSLA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the sharing of genealogical information, techniques and research tools with those who are interested in Jewish genealogy and family history.

Founded in 1979, the Society has grown to over 500 members and is governed by an elected Board of Directors. JGSLA is a member of the Los Angeles Jewish Federation Council of Affiliated Organizations, the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS), and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS), connecting its members with over seventy Jewish Genealogical societies worldwide.  For a review of our first 25 years, see "JGSLA celebrates 25th Anniversary, October 2004."

Meetings are held either on the third Monday evening of the month or on a Sunday afternoon. They provide a varied mix of lectures, workshops and films to assist our members in their family history research. There will be a $5.00 fee for guests to attend our meetings, other than those which are jointly-sponsored by other organizations. We hope that this will encourage guests to become members of JGSLA.  Members who bring their spouse, other family members in the same household, or a significant other to some meetings during the year can upgrade their membership to a Family Membership for $5.00 per year. Single Membership: $25.00; Family Membership: $30.00. AwardMeeting topics and locations are published in our monthly newsletter, Dates and Updates. You will find materials about each speaker and presentation on our website to assist you in preparing for meetings. Handouts, references, and tutorials are posted after a meeting for those interested in further study of a topic. Go to: Meetings - Upcoming and Prior and follow the links to these materials. Quarterly, the Society publishes Roots-Key, its award winning research journal, featuring original articles written by our members and many other experts in the field. Past issues of Roots-Key can be purchased from the Society. Download the double issue, "350 Years of Jews in America." (An Adobe Acrobat .pdf file*).

Housed at the Los Angeles Regional Family History Center, the JGSLA Library is a growing collection of several hundred reference books, journals, CDs, and maps. The Library is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The JGSLA also maintains the Spiszman Traveling Library of useful resource books for members’ use at monthly meetings.
